Common mistakes when working with Adobe Illustrator
Hello guys and girls, today I’m going to share with you a few common mistakes, misconception and productivity slowerer that usually happens while working in Adobe Illustrator. And yes I’m guilty for at least 75 percent of them or else what you think this article content is going to generate itself?
Lets move on!
Before that a minuscule disclaimer : I’m currently using Adobe Illustrator CS3.
Mistake One : Thinking that the Crop Unit i.e mm, pt and pixel is controlled via edit > preferences > Units & Display Preference
On the first intuition you would think setting the general preference. Wrong! Ahahahaha I went through three cycles of edit preferences before I realise that this doesn’t work.
The correct way is to change it at File > Document Setup…
Then only you’ll see that it changes the crop unit whatever unit you specify, In this case, pixels.

Mistake 2: You crop your artwork, but when you save for web and devices, the preview shows you the whole document
This is not a mistake though it could be baffling and certainly counts as a productivity slowivity. Basically you’ll find that adobe illustrator is not following crop area that you have specified. It is so baffling that I once considered reinstalling the software because I thought this annoying thing was a bug.
go to file > save for web and devices…
Uncheck the clip to artboard option and click apply.Problem solved.
